The Caoshan Moon World in Zuozhen Township, Tainan County is a limestone terrain formed by sandstone and shale. It is linked to the muddy terrain in Neimen, Tianliao and Yanchao Townships in Kaohsiung County, and this is referred to as chalk soil terrain. The soft and loose soil, together with erosion of the earth by Caoshan River and Ganglin River means the mountain terrain is transformed into steep, continuous cliffs, just like the moon. Chalk soil is high in alkalinity, therefore plantation is unable to grow, only drought-enduring thorny bamboo is able to survive here, forming a truly unique landscape.
